Attaining a Healthy Work-life Balance in 2023

Attaining a Healthy Work-life Balance in 2023
19th December 2018Abigail Omari

The concept of “work-life balance” is about finding time for other aspects of life besides work. Work takes up a huge chunk of our time on any given day. It is a great challenge for most people to find enough time for family, social relationships, and community responsibilities. We also need personal time that we can dedicate to self-care and personal growth.

Is it possible to achieve an equal balance?

The means we use to earn a living, whether formal or self-employment, is what helps us sustain our lifestyle. We go out to work so that we can take care of our families by providing for their basic needs. Our participation in the community also needs a portion of financial contribution. Without work, we would struggle in all other aspects of life.

It would be impossible to allocate an equal amount of time for work and other responsibilities, as well as time for rest and leisure. Achieving work-life balance requires proper planning. Without a plan on how to juggle all aspects of life, we can easily get overwhelmed. Before long, signs of burnout become evident.

Our goal should be to achieve a healthy balance. Identifying the most important things to do and making a list of priorities helps in time management.

Work-life balance is a learned skill

Organizations should consider providing psychological resources to employees to help them achieve work-life balance. When employees feel fulfilled in all aspects of life, they will be more productive. Investing in your employees’ overall well-being benefits your organization. Their lives will be satisfying and they will work effectively.

An institution like Intrapersonal Health provides psychological tools for organizations and individuals to help with work-life balance. The institution provides psychosocial support services to assist individuals in navigating through work and other life’s challenges.

Organizations should have stress management programs. They should also provide help for anxiety that comes with life’s pressures and when necessary, offer treatment for burnout. Regular mental health, time management, and self-management programs will help employees learn the right work-life balance skills.

Define success on your own terms

We are all leading different lives with different responsibilities. Work-life balance is thus different for everybody. Besides, we need a different kinds of balance at different times in our lives. When you are starting out in your career, you will spend a lot of time at work learning, improving, and seeking opportunities to advance. When you have a family, you have to dedicate enough time to your children. Once your children are older and more independent, you will have more time for yourself.

We should not make the mistake of comparing ourselves to others and trying to live life as they do. By defining success on your own terms, you can set your priorities and goals. Work at your own pace to achieve your goals. Intrapersonal Health offers professional counseling services in Nairobi (Holistic Health) and encourages individuals to seek help in navigating through everyday life.

The fundamental way to balance your life is by setting realistic goals and expectations for yourself. You can then avoid putting too much pressure on yourself at work and in other areas. Work-life balance is a constant decision to find time for the things that are important in your life.
